Foam
What are Foam Dressings?
Our foam dressings are composed of a soft, conformable, microporous, hydrophilic, polyurethane foam with a highly breathable polyurethane membrane or film backing.
We are able to provide both adhesive and non-adhesive foam dressings. Our adhesive dressings have a perforated, pressure sensitive, adhesive wound contact layer. This perforated layer minimises trauma during dressing changes whilst the continuous adhesive coverage ensures security, reducing the risk of leakage.
We are also able to provide foam dressings that include antimicrobials, such as Polyhexamethylene Biguanide (PHMB), which is effective against several bacteria including Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli (E. coli), as well as foams that are easy to remove from sensitive skin (silicone foams).
How do Foam Dressings work?
Foam dressings are designed to absorb large amounts of exudate. The wound contact layer of foam is hydrophilic, so absorbs exudate. The outer layer is hydrophobic, so fluid can’t leak, but vapour can escape. This creates and maintains a moist wound environment which promotes healing.
Our hydrophilic polyurethane foam has a unique ability to absorb high levels of exudate, allowing the dressings to remain in place for a prolonged wear time. The breathable outer membrane provides high fluid handling capability and a waterproof microbial barrier. The flexibility of our foam dressings allows them to remain comfortable and conform to the body contours.
Our foam dressings are clinically proven to be effective when treating and managing both acute and chronic wounds.
What Types of Wounds are Foams Suitable for?
Our foam dressings are indicated for use on wounds at all stages of healing provided there is a moderate to high level of wound exudate. (Foam dressings may not adhere to the wound surface of wounds that are too dry).
Features and Benefits of foam dressings:
- waterproof
- bacterial barrier
- suitable for moderate to heavily exuding wounds
- maintains a moist wound healing environment
- reduced the risk of maceration
- low friction reducing rucking
- kills or reduces bio-burden (PHMB foam)
- kind to skin and easy to remove (silicone foam dressings)
Foam dressings can be used as a primary dressing to protect granulation and epithelial tissue within a wound, whilst absorbing exudate. The adhesive border versions can also be used as secondary dressings.
We are able to supply bilaminate and trilaminate, adhesive and non-adhesive, as well as silicone and antimicrobial foam dressings.
We can also supply foam in bulk roll stock.
